Libby sent the following message to the Japanese government:

December 10, 2009

To Whom it May Concern,

I urge the Japanese Prime Minister to acknowledge, apologize and appropriately compensate the Korean, Chinese and Filipino women who were forced into prostitution during WWII. I further urge your government to implement measures for investigation and disclosure of the history; inclusion in textbooks; erection of monuments; and punishment of criminals involved in this tragedy.

Dalai Lama arrives in Vancouver for peace summitWith no fanfare or cheering followers, the Dalai Lama stepped off a plane at Vancouver International Airport Saturday to begin a four-day visit to B.C. While his arrival was low key, his public events will likely be another story. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader's previous visits to Vancouver have had more of a rock-star feel, drawing sell-out crowds.

NDP MPs URGE HALT TO IRAQ WAR RESISTER DEPORTATION

July 12, 2009 Open Letters to Ministers & Public Officials

OTTAWA
12 August 2009

The Honourable Jason Kenney, PC MP
Minister of Citizenship and Immigration,
The Honourable Peter Van Loan, PC MP
Minister of Public Safety,
House of Commons
OTTAWA ON K1A 0A6

Dear Ministers,

We are writing with regard to impending removal from Canada of Rodney Watson. Mr. Watson is an Iraq war resister who has made a refugee claim in Canada. As you know, Canada refused to participate in the war in Iraq which many Canadians believe to be an illegal war.

We would strongly urge you to immediately intervene to cease all deportation action against Mr. Watson and to allow him to remain in Canada.

In doing so, we would again draw your attention to the concurrence motions passed in both the 39th and 40th Parliaments which called on the government to establish a specific programme for war resisters who seek asylum and permanent residence in Canada.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We look forward to your early reply.

Sincerely yours,

Bill Siksay MP
Burnaby-Douglas

Thousands gather in Vancouver to support Iranians fighting for democratic rightsFederal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff told about 3,000 people at a candlelight vigil in Vancouver Thursday he's proud of Canadians who are fighting for democratic rights in Iran. "The Iranian regime did not anticipate you," he told the last of a series of 10 nightly vigils at the Vancouver Art Gallery aimed at raising awareness of the violence in Iran and calling for a return to a fair and democratic electoral process in that country.

Harper’s hypocrisy: Two years of silence on Malalai Joya from ConservativesOn May 21, 2007, Malalai Joya – the young MP dubbed “the bravest woman in Afghanistan” by the BBC – was unjustly suspended from the Afghan National Assembly. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in Afghanistan on that day and, two years later, has still yet to make any statement about Joya’s mistreatment. “Canada’s participation in this war in Afghanistan has been justified with rhetoric about women’s rights, yet Harper and the Conservatives remained silent when Malalai Joya was ousted from her elected position and again did nothing meaningful when Karzai signed the anti-women provision which sanctioned rape in marriage,” said Parvin Ashrafi, a women’s rights activist with the Iranian Centre for Peace, Freedom and Social Justice and a member of Friends of Malalai Joya -- Canada.

Women on top of anti-war waveNot that all men are warmongers, but it's striking how, in recent years, the most outspoken, out-front, outrageous and out-there peace activists have been women. And older women at that. Is it because, as our baby-making hormones ebb, our anti-war-mones take over? Here in Canada, we have the Raging Grannies, often seen at the front lines of demonstrations against everything from the U.S. attack on Iraq to the globalization of trade that exploits workers, including women and children, around the word.
