NATIONAL HOUSING STRATEGY ONE STEP CLOSER BECOMING REALITY

OTTAWA- Canada is one step closer to having a national housing strategy, thanks to New Democrat Bill C-304, which cleared the committee stage yesterday.

“We have had tremendous support from civil society, municipalities, the private sector and groups from across the political spectrum,” said the Bill’s sponsor, New Democrat Libby Davies (Vancouver East). “This is a clear call for the federal government to step up and take an immediate and coordinated approach to address the growing housing crisis in Canada.”

“I’m proud of the work we have done with our Liberal and Bloc colleagues on this committee to bring forward a strong bill that ties Canada to its national and international commitments to adequate and safe housing,” said New Democrat Housing Critic, Megan Leslie (Halifax).

The federal government has recently been criticized by the United Nations for its inaction on affordable housing and homelessness. Bill C-304 calls on Canada to work with all levels of government, Aboriginal communities, civil society and private sector stakeholders to establish a national strategy to ensure access to adequate, affordable housing.
