PBO REPORT: CONSERVATIVES’ CRIME SPENDING OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY

Dear Friends,

I wanted to share the report released by the Parliamentary Budget Officer today on the rising cost of the criminal justice system while crime rates are dropping.  I am very glad to see this report that skewers the Conservatives' politically motivated and failed approach to crime.  I have included the comments from the federal NDP's Justice critic below.  You can find the full report here.

OTTAWA – NDP Justice critic Françoise Boivin (Gatineau) welcomes the Parliamentary Budget Officer’s (PBO) analysis of criminal justice spending which highlights the dissonance between the Conservative government’s tough-on-crime agenda and the reality of Canada’s decreasing crime rate.

“This report confirms what the NDP has been saying all along: the Conservatives’ skyrocketing spending on criminal justice has more to do with press conferences and scoring political points than protecting Canadians,” said Boivin. “What’s worse, they’re downloading the cost of this unnecessary legislation onto the provinces without bothering to consult them. Canadians deserve better.”

Although the federal government enacts criminal justice legislation, provinces pay almost three quarters of enforcement costs.

“This report highlights the value of having a strong Parliamentary Budget Officer and sheds some light on the real reason the Conservatives seem so determined to diminish this position,” said NDP Public Safety critic Randall Garrison (Esquimalt – Juan de Fuca).
