Libby renews call for a public inquiry into Vancouver's missing and murdered women

Premier Gordon Campbell
Government of British Columbia

The Honourable Vic Toews
Minister of Public Safety
House of Commons

Dear Premier Campbell and Minister Toews,

I write once again to press upon you the urgent need for a public inquiry into the actions of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in the investigation of Vancouver’s missing and murdered women.

A public inquiry is the only acceptable course of action given the new horrifying information revealed since the lifting of the court publication ban and the Crown’s decision to stay the remaining 20 charges against Robert Pickton.

The families and friends of the murdered and missing women deserve answers as to why the disappearance of their daughters, sisters, mothers and friends were overlooked for so long.

I commend the VPD for their acknowledgment of past mistakes and their call, along with the RCMP, for a public inquiry. Many questions remain about the actions of law enforcement in regard to the missing women in Vancouver over the last 20 years, and there are crucial lessons to be learned from an inquiry.

It must also be recognized that many women in the Downtown Eastside are still at risk due to neglect and the failure of governments to act.

I therefore urge the federal government and the government of British Columbia to immediately undertake the needed public inquiry and to work with the City of Vancouver to make public the existing recommendations and findings of the internal investigation by the Vancouver Police Department.

Sincerely,

Libby Davies, MP Vancouver East

cc. Hon. Michael de Jong, Solicitor General of British Columbia
Mayor Gregor Robertson, City of Vancouver
MP Irene Mathyssen, New Democrat Critic for the Status of Women
MP Don Davies, New Democrat Critic for Public Safety
