Libby calls for release of LGTB rights activist in Russia

His Excellency Ambassador Georgiy Enverovich Mamedov
Embassy of the Russian Federation in Canada

Dear Ambassador Mamedov,

I am writing to express my concern over the arrest and detention of Nikolai Alekseev. Mr. Alekseev is a prominent human rights activist, and I am concerned about the ongoing persecution of him and other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) activists in Russia.

I was honoured see Mr. Alekseev serve as the International Hero Grand Marshall Pride Parade in Vancouver this year. He is an inspiration to activists in Canada and around the world.

I encourage the Russian government and police to respect the human rights of all people and of peaceful dissent and assembly of all people, and to encourage Moscow to embrace Pride celebrations. Pride is a celebration of LGBT existence and culture, and is embraced in cities all over the world.

I hope that Mr. Alekseev will be immediately released from detention, and that he and other LGBT activists will soon be welcome in Russia.

Sincerely,
Libby Davies, MP
Vancouver East
