Join me for a Thanksgiving Dinner in support Rodney Watson!

Check out photos from the event here:

Dear friends,

I’d like to invite you to a very special event to help RODNEY WATSON who is approaching his two year anniversary in sanctuary at the First United Church.

I’d like to invite you to share Thanksgiving with Rodney on:
Date: Monday, October 10th
Time: 2pm – 4pm (drop in)
Place: First United Church, 320 East Hasting Street at Gore
** Please RSVP by October 5th, 2011 as space is limited

I and my good friends are cooking a turkey dinner with all the fixings to show our support for Rodney and to encourage support in the community for this brave young man, who, as a matter of conscience, refused to participate in the illegal war on Iraq.

I am excited that my colleague, Don Davies, MP for Vancouver Kingsway, the NDP’s Citizenship and Immigration Spokesperson, is participating in this event and helping out by cooking a turkey, too! (Don’t worry we are good cooks!).

I have gotten to know Rodney and know him to be strong in his conviction for peace and justice, and brave in his commitment to go up against the US military. It’s been a tough two years and the strong support from First United Church and War Resisters Support Campaign and Network, has been enormously important.

I’d really like Rodney to know that people are supporting him. One way we can do that is to share Thanksgiving with each other and increase our efforts to further his cause. It’s not a fundraiser – and we’re volunteering time and food to make a lovely celebration to support Rodney.

We are encouraging people to drop by any time between 4 pm – 6 pm and share some lovely dinner AND also write a letter to the Immigration Minister and your MP about Rodney, supporting his call for Permanent Residence (under humanitarian and compassionate grounds) in Canada.

I’m really delighted that members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) will also be there to “special deliver” our letters to the main Post Office that evening.

Information about war resisters in Canada and Rodney can be found at

We do need you to RSVP by September 30, 2011 (as I need to know how many turkeys to put in the oven!). So please let me know by replying to this email to or phoning my office at 604-775-5800.

I really hope you’ll come! I want Rodney to know he has good support in our community.

Warmest wishes,
