Security and the 2010 Olympics

he RCMP-led security force for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games won’t rule out the use of agents provocateurs to incite protesters to commit illegal acts. Speaking on behalf of the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit, Cpl. Jen Allan said the ISU is charged with ensuring people’s safety. “We are not in a position to detail a specific operational plan as to how we are going to fulfill that obligation,” Allan explained to the Georgia Straight in a telephone interview.

The Tragic Situation of Live In Caregivers

The Tragic Situation of Live In Caregivers

I attended a press conference today, organized by the Philippine Women Centre of BC, the West Coast Domestic Workers’ Association, SIKLAB, and Grassroots Women – BC, to highlight the terrible situation facing Live-In Caregivers who are being removed from Canadian airports, even though they have been approved, and issued legal documents, to work in Canada.

The event focused on the removal of Ligaya Villacrusis, a Filipina nurse who arrived at Vancouver International Airport July 4, with a work visa. She was eventually turned away and sent back to London, because her employment could not be verified.

She’s not the only one … there are many more women who are being traumatized and exploited by unscrupulous employment agencies which can charge $5 000 – $10 000 for their services, and by the Canadian government, which is so deeply complicit in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program that also exploits workers.

I was horrified to hear the details of Ligaya’s situation. Canadians believe we have a fair immigration system and labour practices. Not so! The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is deeply flawed and seems more intent on enforcement and deportation of workers than protecting people’s rights, and ending the harmful practices of these agencies.

I will be writing to the Minister responsible for the Canadian Border Services Agency, as well as the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Canada (the fact that 3 federal departments are involved further frustrates and complicates the situation for these workers), to register my concerns. I will be calling for an end to airport-to-airport deportations, and a full review of the program, emphasizing the need to protect workers’ rights.

My colleague, Olivia Chow, MP for Trinity Spadina, and Critic for Citizenship and Immigration for the NDP, has raised this issue many times in Parliament, as have I. We will continue to press the government to act.

HANSARD

November 5, 2013

Mr. Speaker,

I was very fortunate to visit PEI in early summer with Mike Redmond, Leader of the PEI NDP. We heard about the many challenges people face in accessing rural health care and how provincial resources are stretched to the max.

In particular I want to support the rural community of Souris that I visited. Residents displayed extraordinary unity to maintain their longstanding local access to services.

The Conservative government’s cuts to the health care transfers are compromising health care in rural communities and putting thousands of Islanders’ health at-risk.

This week we celebrate Family Doctor Week in Canada.  Each and every day in this country, family doctors diagnose and treat illness and injury, promote disease prevention and good health, coordinate care and advocate on behalf of their patients.

I want to thank family physicians for the invaluable contribution they provide to Canadians’ health and wish the College of Family Physicians a productive Family Medicine Forum in Vancouver this week.

Libby joins thousands at vigil for Iranians

Federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff told about 3,000 people at a candlelight vigil in Vancouver Thursday he’s proud of Canadians who are fighting for democratic rights in Iran. “The Iranian regime did not anticipate you,” he told the last of a series of 10 nightly vigils at the Vancouver Art Gallery aimed at raising awareness of the violence in Iran and calling for a return to a fair and democratic electoral process in that country.
