Libby asks the Conservative government to invest in public health

House of Commons

HANSARD

March 25, 2014

Ms. Libby Davies (Vancouver East, NDP):

Mr. Speaker, the minister’s assurances ring hollow as she cuts $32 million from the Public Health Agency and eliminates 500 employees across the country.

The Public Health Agency of Canada was set up to respond to national emergencies. Today’s possible Ebola case in Saskatchewan is a reminder of the serious illnesses that Canadians can face.

Given these deep cuts, how does the government plan to deal with public health emergencies in the future?

Hon. Rona Ambrose (Minister of Health, CPC):

Mr. Speaker, the Public Health Agency of Canada is very well funded and very well equipped to manage any of the emerging public health emergencies that we have dealt with in the last number of years. Of course, it was our government that brought the Public Health Agency of Canada into existence. I ask the member not to, in any way, fear monger on the issue of Ebola, because we did confirm this morning that there is no Ebola virus in Saskatoon.

CONSERVATIVES UNDERMINING PUBLIC HEATLH CARE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 24, 2014

OTTAWA – With the 2004 Health Care Accord set to expire in one week, New Democrats are pressing the Conservative government to show leadership and work with provinces and territories to improve our public health care system.

“The new funding formula that the Conservatives unilaterally adopted two years ago is threatening one of the most prized public services for Canadians,” said Health critic Libby Davies (Vancouver – East).

Instead of negotiating a new Health Accord, Conservatives are downloading heath care costs onto the provinces and turning their backs on a system that Canadians have relied on for generations. As a result, we will see increased disparities across the country—longer wait times, reduced-front-line services, and lack of access to home and long term care.

“This is simply unacceptable. The government has a responsibility to ensure quality health care for all of its citizens,” added Deputy critic Dany Morin (Chicoutimi – Le Fjord).

NDP concerned politics will interfere in keeping Insite open

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver’s safe injection site is waiting on Ottawa to renew their exemption from the Controlled Drug and Substances Act once again, but the Federal NDP health critic is concerned politics will get in the way of keeping the doors open. Even though the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2011 Ottawa must allow the safe injection site to continue operating, Vancouver-East Member of Parliament Libby Davies says recent political moves have her worried. “I guess I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the tremendous support that insite has is enough to be able to convince the Federal Government if they try to close down Insite they will have massive opposition on their hands.” Davies believes the Conservative Government isn’t even aware of how many lives have been saved by having nurses supervise injectable drug use on the Downtown East Side. Libby Davies says the proposed Respect for Communities Act introduced in October, along with the Conservative’s online petition coined “Keep heroin out of our backyards,” have her worried.“ The Conservatives have really politicized this issue. This is basically a health service to stop people from dying from overdoses, and help people get the treatment and the help they need. It’s that basic, it’s that straightforward,” says Davies.

Speaking out against Canada Post cuts – Libby Davies

Speaking out against Canada Post cuts

House of Commons

HANSARD

February 27, 2014

Ms. Libby Davies (Vancouver East, NDP):

Mr. Speaker, I and my colleague from Vancouver-Kingsway recently hosted a community forum, where we heard from hundreds of constituents and concerned citizens about how upset they are about Canada Post ending home delivery. They wanted to know why the Conservative government is not standing up for them.

They applauded that Vancouver City Council has unanimously called on Canada Post to suspend the cancellation of home delivery.

We heard loud and clear the safety concerns, the impact on small businesses, seniors and people with disabilities.

People expressed strong support for their letter carriers, who play a critical role in keeping our neighbourhoods safe. My 93-year-old mother Margaret supports her letter carrier. Margaret knows there is no evidence to eliminate this important service.

It is a further erosion of public services driven by a political agenda.

Our community has joined with many others across Canada who say no to the elimination of home delivery.
