Coop Radio Podcast: Libby Davies reflects on her life as an activist at City Hall and in Ottawa

Libby Davies represented the federal riding of Vancouver East for six terms. Before that she spent 11 years as a Vancouver city councillor. Throughout her almost three decades in elected office, Libby remained committed to the issues that drew her into politics as a community organizer in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. We invited Libby down to our studios to talk about Outside In, her new political memoir of her life in public service.

Libby Davies Named NDP Spokesperson for Housing And Homelessness

Ottawa – NDP Libby Davies (MP Vancouver East) has been named the NDP’s Spokesperson for Housing and Homelessness.

“Fighting for adequate and safe housing is the reason I got involved in politics over 30 years ago,” said Davies. “With my bill for a National Housing Strategy before the House, and my experience with the issues, I welcome the opportunity to take on this portfolio.”

Davies, who has held the portfolio in the past, has taken over Housing and Homelessness again after a shift in responsibilities following the departure of veteran Winnipeg MP, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.
“There has been a growing housing crisis since the federal Liberal government backed away from national programs in the 1990s,” said Davies. “At least 1.5 million Canadians are in core housing need, paying more than 30% of their income on housing. Fewer and fewer families can afford skyrocketing market prices and the homelessness count is anywhere between 150,000 and 300,000 people. This is unacceptable for such a wealthy nation as Canada,” said Davies.
“My first priority is to pass my bill for a National Housing Strategy, C-304, and work with all levels of government, aboriginal communities and civil society stakeholders to focus our efforts and resources on addressing Canada’s housing crisis.”
Libby Davies is the NDP House Leader and Deputy Leader, and has held several critic positions for the NDP, including Housing, Labour, and Citizenship and Immigration.

Libby Davies built a career on going to bat for those who live on the margins: sex workers, people who use drugs, the poor, and members of the LGBTQ community. She served as NDP MP for Vancouver East from 1997 to 2015 and, before that, a city councillor under the Coalition of Progressive Electors banner from 1982 to 1993. She was also a founding member of the Downtown Eastside Residents Association, which fought for the neighbourhood’s most vulnerable residents. Ms. Davies recounts four decades of political activism in her new book, Outside In: A Political Memoir, which launches in Vancouver Wednesday with an event at the SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. The Globe and Mail spoke with Ms. Davies on progress made, and the road ahead. Read the full interview at the link below.
